PIQUA — Crews have begun asbestos abatement and the removal of outdated equipment this week at the former Piqua Power Plant, 919 S. Main St., marking the first phase of a major site transformation.

The $3.47 million remediation project, scheduled to run through March 2026, will ready the site for mixed-use commercial redevelopment. Potential future uses include recreational, entertainment, residential, or specialty production facilities — all aimed at boosting job creation and economic growth.

The parking lot and the bike path between the plant and the Great Miami River will remain open throughout the work to limit disruption to the community.

Funding for the project includes a 2024 Ohio Brownfield Remediation Program grant awarded to the Miami County Land Reutilization Corporation, covering 75% of the cost. The remaining funds will be provided by Piqua Power System.

City officials say redeveloping the former plant site could spark new opportunities for both the local economy and community life.
