Piqua, OH – May 22, 2025
Lineworkers from the City of Piqua’s Power System traveled to Lansing, Michigan over the weekend to assist with power restoration efforts after a powerful storm system swept through the region Friday, knocking out electricity to more than 220,000 customers.
The call for assistance came from American Municipal Power, Inc. (AMP), and Piqua responded quickly, deploying three line personnel and a large bucket truck early Saturday morning. The Piqua team joined crews from other AMP member communities to support the Lansing Board of Water & Light (BWL), which reported approximately 26,000 customers without service in its territory alone.
Before heading out, Piqua crews remained on standby locally Friday evening to monitor and respond to any severe weather conditions in the area. Once it was confirmed that Piqua’s system was stable, the team was cleared to assist in Lansing.
Throughout the weekend and into the following week, the Piqua crew worked alongside other utilities in coordinated restoration efforts. Their work helped accelerate the safe return of power to thousands of Lansing residents. The team was officially released from duty Wednesday morning.
“We’re proud of the commitment and professionalism our crews demonstrated throughout this effort,” said RJ Monnier, Director of Piqua Power System. “Providing mutual aid is a key part of being a public power utility, and we’re honored to support our fellow communities in times of need.”
