PIQUA & MIAMI COUNTY — A Piqua police officer has been placed on paid administrative leave following an off-duty altercation that occurred last month in downtown Troy.

Officer Tyler Kelch, 25, is facing misdemeanor charges of assault and disorderly conduct in Miami County Municipal Court stemming from the incident, which occurred on May 10.

According to a report from the Troy Police Department, Kelch was involved in a physical altercation with 24-year-old Kraig Hemmert near Agave & Rye. Witnesses told officers the fight appeared to have started over an incident inside the nearby Submarine House.

Hemmert, who is a deputy with the Miami County Sheriff’s Office, has also been placed on administrative leave pending further review.

City of Piqua officials confirmed that Kelch was placed on leave pending the results of both a criminal investigation and an internal affairs review. He will remain on leave until those investigations are concluded.
