John W. Haney, Sr., 84, of Piqua, passed away peacefully, surrounded by his family at 5:38 p.m. Tuesday, May 13, 2025 at Hospice of Miami County. He was born October 16, 1940 in Piqua to the late William “Bill” and Virginia (Smith) Haney. He married Nancy J. Harrod February 1, 1963 in Piqua; and she preceded him in death August 7, 2019.

Survivors include two daughters, April (Pat) Toopes and Amy (Robb) Honeycutt all of Piqua; one son, John (Renee) Haney Jr. of Cincinnati; eight grandchildren, Brock, Brennan, Trae, Tate, Addelyn, Sarah, Liza, Luke; one great granddaughter, Isla; and his best friend, Bob Scheer of Piqua.

Mr. Haney was a 1959 graduate of Piqua Central High School. He worked for nearly 40 years for Hartzell Propeller in their chrome plating department. He was a proud veteran of the United States Air Force. He was a member of St. Paul’s Church where he served as a Deacon and always looked forward to coffee hour after the service. He was a past member of the Troy Fish & Game. He enjoyed collecting and shooting firearms; loved cars; and enjoyed fishing. He loved to work with his hands as an auto mechanic and was a talented wood carver and whittler. He was an extremely proud grandfather and enjoyed following his grandchildren’s sports and other activities. Additionally, he was a dog lover and absolutely adored his dogs over the years. He will be deeply missed.

A service to honor his life will begin at 2:00 p.m. Friday, May 16, 2025 at St. Paul’s Church with Rev. Dr. Keith A. Gebhart officiating. Burial will follow at Forest Hill Cemetery where full military honors will be provided by the Veterans Elite Tribute Squad. Visitation will be held from 12:00-2:00 p.m. Friday at the church.
