PIQUA — Approximately 160 members of the Ohio Army National Guard’s 1487th Transportation Company have been activated for deployment, the organization announced this week.

The unit, based in Piqua, departed Thursday July 3rd in support of Operation Spartan Shield, a U.S. military mission operating within the U.S. Central Command area. During their deployment, the 1487th will provide transportation assets and logistical support to a variety of military units in the region.

To honor the troops and their families, a call to duty ceremony was held at Piqua High School on Thursday, July 3. The event drew community members, local leaders, and loved ones who came to show support and say farewell.

“We’re proud of the men and women of the 1487th and grateful for their service,” said an Ohio National Guard spokesperson. “Their dedication to duty reflects the very best of what it means to serve.”

The timeline for the deployment has not been publicly disclosed.
