PIQUA, OHIO –The City of Piqua is proud to announce Vance McCulla has been appointed as a captain of the Piqua Fire Department.

The City of Piqua Civil Service Commission confirmed the appointment for Vance McCulla at its meeting on June 4. Piqua City Manager Paul Oberdorfer swore in Captain McCulla on June 16.

“Captain McCulla has been serving the citizens of the Piqua community for over 10 years as a firefighter and paramedic; he has been serving communities in Miami and Champaign Counties for even longer,” said Chief Lee Adams. “We are fortunate to have members like Vance who share a wealth of experience in their dedicated service and willingness to be a leader.”

Captain Vance McCulla brings 25 years of experience in firefighting and emergency medical services. He began his career as a junior firefighter with the JSP Fire District while still in high school and has remained actively involved with the volunteer department, where he currently serves as fire chief. Originally, from St. Paris, Ohio, Captain McCulla continues to reside there with his children, Evan and Ava.

Captain McCulla is also a public safety diver with Piqua Fire Department’s dive team and takes pride in both the specialized training and interagency collaboration that the role requires.

“I’m passionate about supporting our personnel—they are our greatest asset,” said Captain Vance McCulla. “I look forward to continuing to serve the department and our community in this new capacity.”

The process of choosing a new fire captain is governed by rules and regulations established by the Civil Service Commission and is administered by the human resources director.

“The promotional process for this position requires significant preparation and determination from the candidates,” City of Piqua Human Resources Director Catherine Bogan said. “Captain McCulla’s dedication, experience and commitment to the fire service make him exceptionally well-prepared to lead and serve our community in this new role.”

The promotional process included both a written test and an assessment center administered by the Ohio Fire Chiefs’ Association. Candidates were required to achieve a 70 percent on the written test in order to move on to the assessment testing center. Final weighted scores determined the candidates’ placement on the eligibility list for promotion as certified by the Civil Service Commission.
