Piqua, OH – April 17, 2025 — The Piqua Police Department announced today that Lieutenant Marcos Rodriguez has been cleared to return to active duty following an officer-involved shooting that occurred earlier this year.
The incident, which took place on February 21 at 236 McKinley Avenue, involved a response to a domestic violence call at 4:44 p.m. Lt. Rodriguez was among four officers who arrived on the scene. Following the incident, he was placed on paid administrative leave while an investigation was conducted. The other three officers involved remained on active duty.
At the request of the Piqua Police Department, the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation (Ohio BCI) conducted an independent investigation into the shooting. After reviewing the Ohio BCI’s findings, Miami County Prosecuting Attorney Paul M. Watkins determined that Lt. Rodriguez’s actions were justified.
“There is no evidence to suggest that an objectively reasonable officer would have acted differently in this incident,” Watkins stated in a letter to Piqua Police Chief Rick Byron. “I conclude that Lt. Rodriguez was justified in all respects when he discharged his weapon … Moreover, Lt. Rodriguez acted in a manner consistent with his training.”
The Piqua Police Department has confirmed that no further updates will be provided regarding the case.
